Taking Root is proud to announce the successful completion of its transition from a not-for-profit to a purpose-driven corporation. This strategic move is poised to enhance the organization’s capabilities to grow globally and further achieve its mission of improving the livelihoods of farmers by growing trees.
Why is Taking Root seeking to grow?
In response to the alarming rate of global deforestation, jeopardizing ecosystems, climate stability and the livelihoods of millions, Taking Root is evolving to make a more significant impact. Since 2007, Taking Root has refined its model for restoring forests in partnership with smallholder farmers. This proven model, exemplified by Taking Root’s industry-leading CommuniTree Program, has enabled thousands of farmers to restore land across Nicaragua, positioning Taking Root as a leader in forest restoration initiatives. Taking Root’s transition to a corporate structure is a pivotal step in replicating this model worldwide.
A structure to unlock forest restoration at scale
Historically, Taking Root has funded its forest restoration efforts through the sale of high-integrity carbon removals. Unlocking forest restoration in new geographies requires substantial upfront investment before it can be sustained through carbon financing.
“The world urgently needs action to restore the world’s forests at scale. By establishing a corporate entity that can mobilize funds, Taking Root can accelerate crucial efforts needed to develop more projects, ultimately fostering the growth of more trees with more farmers,” said Kahlil Baker, PhD., Taking Root’s CEO and co-founder.
The new corporate structure positions Taking Root to access additional investment and grant opportunities, enabling the expansion of its platform for forest restoration with smallholder farmers. “This transition marks an exciting stage for Taking Root’s growth, unlocking the ability to invest in the organization’s capability to source, design, and operate world-leading forest restoration projects,” added Baker.
Enshrining Taking Root’s purpose
Taking Root’s unwavering dedication to its purpose and mission over the years has been central to its success. The transition has been thoughtfully designed to deepen Taking Root’s dedication to accelerating the world’s forests. A cornerstone of the transition is the formal institutionalization of Taking Root’s mission into the constitution. In addition, the not-for-profit entity will continue in a governance capacity on the board of Taking Root to ensure that the mission of improving farmer livelihoods by growing trees and Taking Root’s values remain at the heart of Taking Root’s operations.
Brooke van Mossel-Forrester, original co-founder of the Taking Root not-for-profit, and the not-for-profit representative on the board, said: “Taking Root’s transition is essential to bringing the investment required to build a flourishing future for Taking Root, its partnering farmers and their forests, all while keeping the organization’s original mission close to heart.”
